Purchasing a RV is a large investment, so it’s important to get what you want and need the first time around. Make sure you check out multiple dealers and get a variety of quotes so you know you are getting the most for your money. Once you have decided that you want one, there are a number of questions you need to ask and options you need to consider.
After you have made the decision to purchase a RV, there are numerous things you need to consider while searching for the perfect one. The first thing you need to think about, and maybe the most important, is how much your vehicle can pull. The last thing you want to do is buy a beautiful trailer, only to discover that the only way it will be leaving your backyard is if you buy a bigger vehicle to tow it. Check your owner’s manual to find out just how much towing capacity your vehicle has. Also take into consideration that you will have additional luggage packed into your RV when you go on trips.
You will also want to think about how many people will be residing in your RV at any given time. You won’t want a really small RV if a family of 5 is planning on staying in it every night. On the other hand, if just two people will be using the RV, you don’t necessarily need a big one with a lot of space. Something that goes along with this is sleeping arrangements. Your RV may be big enough to hold five people, but will everyone have somewhere to sleep?
Another big consideration is how much is in your budget. Make sure to determine beforehand how much you can spend on your RV. It is dangerous to go shopping without a limit, but the danger rises when it is for an item that is as costly as this one. Talk over your budget with your spouse or whomever you will be RVing with and stick to it no matter what the sales people tell you.
If you have already been in the RV business or you have a pretty large budget, a new RV is always a great option. When buying new, make sure to ask about the warranty, as well as what is included in the price. Just because fancy amenities are in the RV you toured, doesn’t mean they are included in the base price. If you have some money to work with, ask what the options for upgrades include. If you really want a nice RV, there are a number of fancy amenities you can have installed in yours.
When buying used, there are a few more questions you need to ask. If you plan to buy a motorhome, ask about the mileage put on the vehicle. For both, ask about tire conditions, age, and how well the appliances work. If you have allergies, ask if the previous owner had any animals traveling with them. Also be sure to ask if the previous owner smoked inside the trailer. Make sure you thoroughly check both the exterior and interior for any damage or wear and tear.
Whether you have a large budget or a small one, there is a RV out there that is perfect for you. Keep your needs in mind while looking and don’t let sales people talk you into something you don’t want. Traveling by RV is an experience you will fall in love with, and a great RV will only make it better. Happy hunting!
